Brasilia International School (BIS) was founded in September of 1999 as Brasilia International Academy by the Network of International Christian Schools (NICS). The school was located in Asa Norte and was attended by 11 students from 6 different countries. It became very apparent that if BIS was to be established in Brasilia, a few changes were needed. First, Brasilia International Academy changed its name to Brasilia International School. Second, BIS moved to the International Baptist Church in Lago Sul and then one year later to a separate facility in QI 19. In August of 2000, BIS opened with 18 students from over eight countries and concluded with 29 students. In August of 2001, BIS opened with 28 students from over 15 countries and concluded with 39 students. In August of 2002, BIS opened with 45 students from over twenty countries and concluded with over 80 students. At the start of the 2003-2004 school year, BIS had over 100 students from over twenty countries pass through its doors. In the 2004-2005 school year, the enrollment at BIS reached a high of 108 students from all around the world.
During the 2006-2007 school year, BIS successfully completed its first dual accreditation process for grades K-12 with the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) and the Association of Christian Schools International (ACSI). In August of 2008, BIS moved to a new facility in SGAS 914, Asa Sul. The new location incorporated 15 large classrooms, a computer lab, a large science lab, a brand new library/media center, a small soccer field, two multi-purpose sports courts, covered areas and much more. In 2009-2010, BIS was nationally recognized as an international school by the National Council of Education of Brazil and a member of the Association of American Schools of Brazil (AASB). During the 2011-2012 school year, BIS had several notable accomplishments. This included successfully completing a reaccreditation process with both AdvancED (formerly SACS) and ACSI.
The 2014-2015 school year continues to bring about positive change around the campus and other academic programs. BIS incorporated a new Online Learning Center (OLC) for all secondary students. The OLC houses multiple computer stations for students who are participated online courses. This includes both honors and AP coursework. The spiritual emphasis programs were reformatted to create new excitement in this area of the BIS ministry. The high school and the junior high (middle school) program was changed to simply The LOFT (Living Out Faith Together). The 2015-2016 school year began with another record enrollment year of 155 students from over 34 nations from around the world. BIS added 20 Google Chromebooks into the secondary program to enhance technological integration in the classroom. The preschool program was renovated and renamed to the Early Learning Center (ELC) leading to significant growth throughout the program. The Landing was implemented to enhance the spiritual emphasis program for elementary and ELC students. In addition, PowerSchool was officially adopted as the school operating system.
The 2016-2017 school year saw another year of record enrollment accounting for over 180 students. BIS officially launched and began formal implementation of the Rubicon Atlas curriculum mapping system to steer toward standards-based instruction. During the spring of 2017, BIS was successfully re-accredited for a joint accreditation by the Association of Christian Schools International (ACSI) and AdvancED. The accreditation process consisted of an in-depth self-study of every aspect of the school and all that had culminated since the previous visit in 2010. The joint ACSI/AdvancED team paid an on-site visit to our campus in April 2017. Shortly thereafter, BIS was awarded a full re-accreditation for the maximum term (6 years) by both ACSI and AdvancED. BIS continues to grow its enrollment as projected to soon extend beyond 200 students. The BIS team is committed to keeping an intentional focus toward a superior academic program. At the same time, not losing sight of our humble beginnings as a ministry of which God has provided such an amazing opportunity to share the Gospel with students and families from around the world through international Christian education.
