Mission and Values

Brasilia International School is a caring learning community based on a Biblical worldview. BIS prepares international students to be life-long learners, effective communicators, responsible citizens, healthy people, and spiritually sensitive individuals.

Mission Definition

BIS endeavors to partner with parents in their role to instruct their children in the way they should go (Proverbs 22:6). In this partnership, BIS commits to providing a dynamic, challenging, and holistic education that recognizes the personal uniqueness of each student and develops them into the person they were created to be. To reach one’s God-given potential, there must be an inner transformation that takes place. When that happens, boys and girls, young men and women are not only transformed, but they begin to impact the world around them. Nothing gives us more pleasure, aside from salvation in Christ, when God receives glory in and through students’ lives.

Preparing International Students to Positively Impact the World

Vision Definition

BIS is committed to Christ-centered education with a ministry mindset. We are a school that puts Christ at the center of all academics and activities. We strive to reach our students with the love of Christ and nurture in them Christ-like character and love for God. This Christ-centered focus forms the foundation of our family-friendly environment that respects and encompasses students and families for nations around the world. BIS is a place where students and families are welcomed, known, and valued. No student is merely a name on a class list. Our administration, teachers, and staff strive to educate with a high level of academic integrity and reach each and every child on a daily basis. We want to know our students, make them feel a part of a family, and provide for them a safe place to belong. This commitment transcends to the families of our students and beyond so that our vision of preparing international students to positively impact the world remains while at the same time the glory of God is ultimately realized.

Core Values

There are four core values and seven additional principles by which BIS operates. These core values are the bedrock of our school ministry for our administrative leadership, educational approach, extracurricular activities, sports programs, and family events.

Biblical Worldview

BIS is a Christian school founded upon the belief that God is the source of all truth, and true instruction is based on His revealed Word, the Bible. Our team is dedicated to establishing a godly environment in which the Bible is actively integrated into all aspects of school life. We strive to encourage students to learn more about Christ in their daily lives through a variety of avenues: studying the Bible, age-level interactive activities, spiritual emphasis programs, and various community service projects all of which respect the various worldviews represented at BIS.

Caring Community

We are a family at BIS. When students join our school, they join the BIS family. Our international atmosphere is an open door for students of all cultures, races, faiths, and nationalities. The administration is committed to this same open door approach with staff, students, and families. We proactively seek to build relationships among students between students and teachers that go beyond the classroom walls and grade levels. Our goal is to help our students learn to respectfully interact across age, cultural, and ethnic boundaries. We also strive to reach out to our students by creating opportunities for each family member to participate in school functions and various activities.

Holistic Education

BIS believes that education is characterized by a dynamic, challenging curriculum coupled with a high expectation for student achievement. We view education holistically of which equates to focusing on addressing all of the needs of a child's life: intellectual, emotional, physical, relational, creative, and spiritual. Education includes far more than learning to pass an exam or grade simply on compliance versus that of a child’s God-given potential. We strive to create opportunities for our students to apply what they have learned while maintaining a focus on in-depth proficiency in all applicable subject areas. Our goal as a BIS team is to instill a love for a life-long learner through a display of Christ-centered grace and compassion. We are committed to encourage and challenge all students to realize they have the potential to be successful as each child is created uniquely in God’s image for a specific purpose in life.

Personal Excellence

We believe every person should always pursue excellence. Pursuing excellence means that one is working towards being exceptional. Excellence has a place in the academic world, professional arena, and our personal lives as well. We encourage all members of our community to strive for excellence in whatever they do. We want our students to their best in their academics; collaborate with their peers, and work to improve the BIS community and their world. BIS strives to employ teachers who strive for excellence in their professional lives and find ways to improve student learning in the classroom. Teachers who seek professional development will provide their students with the best educational experience possible. BIS seeks teachers who are excellent educators but all places Christ at the center of their mission both in the classroom but also going over and beyond to biblical truth with students and families as found in a lasting relationship with Christ. Students will be challenged to develop and pursue personal excellence in their own lives, striving ultimately to follow and fulfill their God-given potential.

Additional Principles

  1. Integrating Biblical principles into school life develops character and integrity.
  2. Students learn best in a safe, structured, caring environment, which helps minimize transition stress and meets the diverse needs of international children.
  3. Each child is a very special creation with unique intellectual, social, physical, emotional and spiritual needs.
  4. Improving student learning is a primary goal of BIS; the advancement of this goal relies on the shared responsibility of the entire school community.
  5. Dedicated, qualified staff members are keys to improving and sustaining student learning.
  6. Since students learn in different ways, they are provided with individual attention and a variety of instructional approaches to support their learning.
  7. High expectations and recognition encourage students and staff to strive for excellence.

BIS is a private Christian school established to primarily serve but not limited to the international community in Brasilia. The goal of BIS is to provide a high-quality U.S. style education based on a Biblical worldview. Students from all countries, cultures, and religions are treated with respect and fairness, including the Federal Republic of Brazil, its leaders, and the people. The programs at BIS are directed toward individual enrichment in the following areas: Intellectual, Social, Physical, Emotional, and Spiritual Development. BIS believes that each student is a unique creation of infinite worth. Each student is encouraged to pursue academic excellence. BIS recognizes that student abilities and learning styles differ from one individual to the next. These differences are taken into consideration in the educational process. By providing a low student-teacher ratio, BIS helps each student achieve his/her full potential. Students are encouraged to make wise choices as they interact with their peers and their teachers within BIS community. As students learn to behave responsibly at school, they gain necessary life skills to become successful, contributing leaders who will positively impact the world.
